A timeline of the major events of the USA-China trade conflict, and what led up to it. The timeline will be continually updated as events of note occur. Informational links and resources can be found below.

March 23, 2018 US imposes tariffs of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum imports from China.
April 2, 2018 China’s imposes up to 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum as well as other US products such as frozen pork and wine.
July 6, 2018 US imposes tariffs on 818 Chinese import items worth $34 billion and China responds with tariffs on 545 US import items in retaliation.
August 23, 2018 US imposes more tariffs up to 25% on 279 Chinese import items worth $16 billion and China responds with tariffs on 333 US import items in retaliation.
September 6, 2018 Public comment period for List 3 of US tariffs on Chinese products ends.
September 7, 2018 Trump threatens to impose more new tariffs on $267 billion; essentially all Chinese exports to the US.
September 12, 2018 US invited China to restart trade negotiations before tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods (List 3) go into effect, according to the White House’s top economic advisor, Larry Kudlow.
September 17, 2018 Finalized list of tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods (List 3) announced by USTR to go into effect on September 24 at an initial rate of 10%, to be increased to 25 % by January 1, 2019.
September 18, 2018 China announces that it will implement tariffs in retaliation on $60 billion worth of US goods (List 3) to go into effect on September 24.
September 22, 2018 China cancels trade talks planned with US ahead of the impending implementation of US tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods (List 3).
September 24, 2018 US and China implement third round of tariffs (List 3), bringing the total amount to $250 billion. The tariffs carry an initial rate of 10%, and will be increased to 25% by January 1, 2019.
December 1, 2018 US and China strike a truce at the G-20 summit and US agrees to delay a planned increase of the tariff rate on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25% from 10%. Trade deal to be set within 90 days.
February 24, 2019 Further delays from US to increase the tariff rate on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to 25% from 10% while citing “substantial progress” in the most recent round of trade talks.
March 2019 Bilateral talks continue….
April 2019 Reports that the US-China tariffs will not be lifted by any agreement.
May 10, 2019 Imports from China that were previously hit by a 10% tariff under the September 2018 action are now subject to a 25% rate.
May 14, 2019 China says it will raise tariffs on some US imports from 1 June, extending a mutual trade war. Reports says the two countries are in touch, but no report if trade talks will resume.
